This ones for the cats

If you've met me even once, you'll know that I give the phrase "crazy cat lady" a whole new meaning. That, paired with moving across the country to a town where I knew a grand total of zero people and had to immediately deal with Matt having 13-15 hour work days means that I grew attached to the little kitten we got quite quickly. We had to drive about an hour and a half during a completely crazy summer thunderstorm to go get him - and then an hour and a half drive back. In the first few days, I learned that he loved the rain, but hated thunder. He would crawl under the covers of the bed even if I wasn't there.
He loves to be around you, but won't always want to cuddle. Sometimes, he just wants you to want to pay attention to him, but he doesn't actually want the attention. Although any time you are in the kitchen, he's all over you in the hopes of getting some human food. The first few days we had the house, the only thing set up was a mattress on the floor and a coffee table for me to eat on. It had just enough room for Dobby to hop up and stick his face in a bowl of marinara sauce, kick starting his obsession with human food.
We learned that Dobby loves to help out around the house - he will even sit in the dishwasher while you load it and lick the dishes clean for you. He doesn't understand that we still need to run it, or that soapy water isn't all that good for him. Any time you open the bathroom door, he's ready to run in and assist you in any way you need, even if it's by sitting on your lap while you are sitting on the toilet. He will stand guard on the edge of the tub while I take a bath to make sure that I'm actually okay with being submerged in water. He's also very eager to hop in and freshen our clothes up.
And then we added a new addition to the Hertzog cats and Dobby was thrilled! A little too enthusiastic as well, because all Sirius wanted was to get used to this new place that smelled different. After a few hours of tip-pawing around each other and a couple of hisses, Sirius started to get more comfortable in our house, and with Dobby. They have been inseparable ever since, helping each other find new and inventive ways of creating trouble.
"Mom look, we were hungry and we found a way to feed ourselves!"
"I know you are in Seattle for Christmas but I just got so hungry I couldn't wait for Kristen to feed me so I tried to feed myself and now I'm stuck."
"Oh you are cooking food for me aren't you I WANNA SEE IT"
Sirius started off a scared little kitten. He'd freak out if you stepped too loudly, he didn't want to be near your face AT ALL, and he was an all around skittish little kitty who was scared in a new place. We quickly learned that he loved getting buttscratches, and would flop over for more attention. He also loves to be near you, but doesn't like to cuddle on top of you. He's doing much better with faces, and will even stick his face near your mouth if you are wearing scented chapstick or have had a yummy lunch he feels like he's entitled to. He's gotten so much more comfortable in our house, and with Dobby. They rule the land now, and together they create so much trouble I feel like I have toddlers instead of cats.
When you don't have a very large support system around you, you'll take love where you can find it. I find love in my friends (near & far), in my husband, and in the little stinkers who stole my heart with their meows and headbutts.

PS - I tried to be a dog person, I really did. I even found a dog that was cat sized. It just didn't work out.
